Please join Dr. Congdon as he explains on what day of the week the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. For many years people debate as to whether it was on Wednesday, Thursdays, or Friday of the week that began with the selection of the lambs (what we call Palm Sunday) and ended with the resurrection of the Lord.
The problem centers upon the Lord's declaration "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." (Matthew 12:40), which requires a Wednesday or Thursday crucifixion. When this is compared with verses such as John 19:31 which requires the crucifixion to be on the day before the weekly Sabbath (our Friday) and others in Matthew 16:21; 17:23; 20:19; Luke 24:7, 21; and 1 Corinthians 15:4, we have a seemingly contradiction in the Scriptures.
But God cannot contradict Himself. Thus, there may be an explanation how all the verses are speaking of the same time frame.
See how a consideration of the three Jewish feasts of that week and the way in which the Jewish people of the 1st century understood resolves this "contradiction."
